ぴったりした動詞を選ぼう　目次

　英語は他の言語より語彙数が多いそうですが，動詞も例外ではないようです。例えば to walk（歩く）の類義語を並べると下表のように，かなりの数になります。日本語で動詞に修飾語をつける必要がある場合に，英語では「大股に歩く」は stride，「とぼとぼ歩く」は trudge と，動詞１語によって簡潔な表現が可能になります。動詞に限らずぴったりした語を選ぶことで英語の格調が高まることは間違いありません。

to hike	to walk a long way in the mountains or countryside	ハイキングする
to march	to walk quickly and with firm, regular steps like a soldier	行進する
to pace	to walk with slow, regular, steady steps, usually backwards and forwards	行ったり来たりして歩く
to perambulate	to walk around or along a place without hurrying	歩きまわる
to saunter	to walk in a slow unhurried way, that makes you look confident or proud	^{^＊}散歩する
to stride	to walk quickly with long steps	大股に歩く
to stroll	to walk somewhere in a slow relaxed way	ぶらつき歩く
to traipse	to walk somewhere slowly and unwillingly when you are tired	重い足取りで歩く
to tramp	to walk around or through somewhere with firm or heavy steps	どしんどしん歩く
to trudge	to walk with slow heavy steps, especially because you are tired	とぼとぼ歩く
to wade	to walk through water that is not deep	（川などを）歩いて渡る

また to walk には，他動詞として「バッターに四球を与える」という意味がありますが，The pitcher gives the batter base on balls. よりも，The pitcher walks the batter. と言うのがふつうです。文脈が明らかな生中継であれば，さらに簡潔に He walks him. で済ませてしまいます。(He = pitcher, him = batter)

　現代の科学論文では正確で簡潔な表現が求められますので，下記の左側のような大げさな名詞を使った「不必要で複雑な言い回し」を避け，矢印の右側のように動詞で表現することが推奨されています²⁾。
